There is a unique kind of magic that happens when you mix the raw, fierce ambition of young athletes with the unbound thrill of an international road trip.
Recently, I had the absolute honor and privilege of managing the travel logistics and leading a phenomenal group of young champions from the Jaguar Swim Club across the border to Rwanda for the prestigious 5th Mako Sharks Championships in Kigali.
As a travel manager, I am no stranger to the open road, wild horizons or complex itineraries. But this trip was a beautiful milestone of firsts for me: crossing an international border with an entire group of enthusiastic children. It was a journey that reminded me exactly why I fell in love with travel management—seeing the world anew through the wide, curious eyes of the next generation.
The Magic of the Open Road: Tales from the Car
The adventure began long before we dipped our toes into the Kigali swimming pools. The moment the wheels rolled out, our vehicle transformed into a rolling hub of laughter, endless questions, and pure, unfiltered excitement. Getting to know these young athletes outside their rigorous training environments was a true joy. They weren’t just thinking about their swimming strokes; they were deeply, beautifully immersed in the journey itself.
The anticipation was palpable right from the start. Barely past Masaka, a chorus of eager voices began asking how much further it was to the border. Their urgency to step into a new country was a beautiful reminder of how travel sparks curiosity.
Along the way, some of the children naturally took on the role of enthusiastic tour guides, map-reading and sharing local “wisdom” with their peers. In one of my favorite moments of the trip, Josiah a young guide from Kampala confidently explained the changing terrain to his friends:
“Guys, listen! The moment you see a spaghetti road, you must know that we have finally reached Kabale“
When we finally crossed the border, the explosion of excitement in the vehicle was unforgettable. Navigating border immigration with a large children group requires precision, strict documentation and care, but the smooth transition made the milestone incredibly rewarding. For these children, stamping their passports wasn’t just administrative—it was the official beginning of an international sporting quest.
The Splash Zone: Deepening the Love for Swimming
Reaching Kigali and entering the competitive arena of the 5th Mako Sharks Championships brought a wonderful shift in focus. Watching these young swimmers step up to the blocks representing Uganda’s Jaguar Swim Club was a profoundly proud moment. International exposure at this age does wonders for a young athlete; it expands their horizons, introduces them to fierce peers from across East Africa and fuels a lifelong passion for the sport.
Between the intense heats and the deafening cheers, the children spent time analyzing races, discussing techniques and truly falling deeper in love with the swimming sport. They went to Kigali as club swimmers, but they returned as international competitors who understand the dedication, sportsmanship and joy that swimming brings.

A Heartfelt thank you to our Jaguar Swim Club parents
An extraordinary journey like this does not happen in a vacuum. I want to extend a massive, deeply heartfelt shout-out to the incredible parents of the Jaguar Swim Club. Thank you for your unwavering financial, emotional and logistical support for your little ones. The Parents in the patrol car, much love
More than that, thank you for entrusting your precious children to our care. Allowing them to embark on this cross-border expedition speaks volumes of your commitment to their growth, both as elite athletes and global citizens. Crossing international borders with a young team is a huge responsibility and your faith in our management made the journey seamless.
Fueling sports and tourism across East Africa
This trip proved that sports and travel are powerful tools for unity, maturity and youth empowerment. Witnessing the camaraderie, the leadership skills budding during a long drive, and the sheer joy of international victory has left a lasting impression on my heart. We look forward to many more cross-border championships, nurturing local talent and guiding our young champions to even greater heights!
